The at-home psilocybin retreat: a four-week plan

Three weeks of preparation, a lighter dieta, the day itself with a sitter, and four weeks of integration, each step with its source.

Research sessions with psilocybin are planned in three parts: preparation before, a supervised day, and integration after. The safety guidelines written by the Johns Hopkins team describe screening volunteers, preparing them beforehand, and having at least two monitors present so that the volunteer is never alone. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] This plan borrows that shape for adults who will go ahead at home regardless. It does not make an unsupervised session safe; it makes it less unsafe.

Print the planner and the integration journal to work through alongside it.

Week minus 3: decide whether to do this at all

Screen yourself honestly

Write your intention

An intention is a short, honest statement of what you hope to understand or change. It gives the day a direction without setting a target. Journaling prompts for this week:

  • What is happening in my life that makes me want to do this now?
  • What am I hoping for, and what would I be disappointed not to find?
  • What am I afraid of meeting? What would I do if it came?

Set and setting, the psychological, social and cultural conditions around a psychedelic experience, shape the response to the drug; a history of the idea traces it back to the 1950s and 1960s. [Constructing drug effects: a history of set and setting, Drug Science, Policy and Law, 2017, read 28 October 2026] [Psychedelics and the essential importance of context, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2018, read 28 October 2026]

Week minus 2: the sitter and the space

Choose a sitter

Pick one sober adult you trust, who is calm under pressure and will not need anything from you on the day. Read the trip sitter guide together and sign the sitter agreement in the planner. Agree in advance on touch (for example, holding a hand only if asked), and agree that there is no sexual contact of any kind.

Prepare the space

  • A quiet room you can lie down in, with a blanket, water, tissues, a bucket and eyeshades.
  • No access to balconies, open windows, stairs without a rail, car keys or sharp tools.
  • Music chosen and downloaded in advance: long, mostly wordless pieces. Phones off, except the sitter's.
  • An emergency plan on paper: the local emergency number, the nearest emergency department and the address of the room.

Sleep and alcohol

Use these weeks to sleep regular hours and to cut back on alcohol. The Dutch drug information service advises against combining mushrooms with other drugs and says alcohol raises the chance of a bad trip. [Paddo's: combinatiegebruik, DRUGSinfo, Trimbos-instituut, read 28 October 2026]

Week minus 1: a lighter dieta

The dieta that comes with ayahuasca has two roots. One is tradition: in Peru, dietas of simple food with no salt, sugar or oil can last days to months. The other is pharmacology: ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, and ICEERS advises avoiding tyramine-rich foods such as aged cheese, soy sauce and wine around a session. [Deciding to take ayahuasca, ICEERS, 2018, read 28 October 2026] [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] Psilocybin contains no MAO inhibitor, so it carries no tyramine rule. Research protocols set only practical rules, such as a low-fat breakfast on the morning of a session. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] A lighter dieta is still a good way to mark the week as different and to arrive clear-headed:

  • Simple, familiar food, and a light breakfast on the day.
  • Less caffeine and sugar, and no alcohol for at least a few days before.
  • No cannabis or other drugs. DRUGSinfo notes cannabis can make a mushroom trip stronger, longer or less controllable. [Paddo's: combinatiegebruik, DRUGSinfo, Trimbos-instituut, read 28 October 2026]
  • A media fast: less news and social media, more walking, reading and sleep.

Never combine with MAOIs, ayahuasca or Syrian rue

Combining psilocybin with ayahuasca, Syrian rue or harmala extracts (sometimes called psilohuasca) is not a stronger version of this plan. Syrian rue seed extracts are potent MAO-A inhibitors, and a review of serotonin toxicity found that true serotonin toxicity typically involves an MAOI combined with a drug that raises serotonin. [beta-Carboline alkaloids in Peganum harmala and inhibition of human monoamine oxidase (MAO), Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2010, read 28 October 2026] [Serotonin toxicity of serotonergic psychedelics, Psychopharmacology, 2022, read 28 October 2026] Avoid it, and avoid prescription MAOI antidepressants with psilocybin.

This week, use the dose calculator and decide on an amount at the lower end of its range, weighed on a scale. Check the tolerance calculator if you have taken any psychedelic in the last two weeks.

The day

A timeline

Timing varies with dose, food and the person. Early studies found effects generally begin within 30 minutes of swallowing psilocybin, peak within one to two hours and subside over the next few hours. [The abuse potential of medical psilocybin according to the 8 factors of the Controlled Substances Act, Neuropharmacology, 2018, read 28 October 2026] Erowid gives a duration of two to six hours for mushrooms. [Psilocybin mushroom dosage (archived copy), Erowid, via Internet Archive, 2026, read 28 October 2026] In practice:

  • Before: a light breakfast, read your intention together, and settle into the room.
  • First hour: effects begin. Lie down, eyeshades on, music playing. Research preparation warns of sensations such as nausea; the advice is to trust that the body will keep working. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026]
  • Hours two to three: the strongest part. Go inward; there is nothing to achieve.
  • Hours three to six: a gradual return. Sit up, drink water, eat some fruit.
  • Evening: a simple meal, a few words in the journal, an early night. The sitter stays until effects have clearly ended.

More detail is in how long do shrooms last and what to do during a trip.

The sitter's role

The Zendo Project, a psychedelic peer support service, trains volunteers in four principles: [Zendo Project guide: the four principles of psychedelic support, Zendo Project, read 28 October 2026]

  • Safe space. Physically safe, quiet, and free of judgement.
  • Sitting, not guiding. Be present and attentive without steering what happens.
  • Through, not down. Accompany the person through what is happening, without automatically trying to stop or suppress it.
  • Difficult is not necessarily bad. A hard passage can be a meaningful one.

In a difficult moment

Research volunteers are told that if a frightening image appears, such as a monster, they can approach it and ask why it has appeared rather than flee. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] Breathe slowly, feel the body against the floor, and let the feeling move rather than fighting it. The sitter can offer a hand if that was agreed, a few calm words (“You took mushrooms. You are safe. This will pass.”), and a change of music or light. See bad trip: what to do. In a survey of 1,993 people describing their most difficult mushroom experience, 11% said they put themselves or others at risk of physical harm, and 2.7% received medical help. Risk was higher at higher doses and when physical comfort and social support were missing, which is why a sitter matters. [Survey study of challenging experiences after ingesting psilocybin mushrooms: acute and enduring positive and negative consequences, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2016, read 28 October 2026]

When to call for help

Call emergency services for chest pain, a seizure, difficulty breathing, fainting, or any risk of harm to the person or others. Tell them exactly what was taken, how much and when. For emotional support that is not a medical emergency, in the US the Fireside Project's peer support line takes calls and texts on 62-FIRESIDE (623-473-7433), every day from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pacific. [Fireside Project: psychedelic peer support line, Fireside Project, read 28 October 2026]

Integration: the four weeks after

The first 72 hours

  • Rest. Keep the next day free of work, travel and big decisions.
  • Write down what happened before interpreting it. The journal has prompts for day 1 and day 3.
  • Talk with your sitter or one trusted person. Notice your sleep and mood; if anything worries you, tell someone.

Weeks one to four

Integration is the ongoing work of making sense of an experience and carrying anything useful into ordinary life. A review of the concept describes it as a process, supported by practices such as reflection, journaling, conversation and therapy. [Psychedelic integration: an analysis of the concept and its practice, Frontiers in Psychology, 2022, read 28 October 2026] One therapy model used in psilocybin trials, built on psychological flexibility, frames the work as accepting difficult feelings, connecting with values and others, and embodying change. [The use of the psychological flexibility model to support psychedelic assisted therapy, Journal of Contextual Behavioral Science, 2020, read 28 October 2026]

  • Week 1: noticing. What has stayed with you? Where do you see a difference?
  • Week 2: meaning. Which images or feelings keep returning?
  • Week 3: one change. Try a small, concrete change and notice what helps or gets in the way.
  • Week 4: looking back. Re-read your intention. What do you need next?

A harm-reduction model for therapists describes integration support for people who use psychedelics outside clinical settings, before and after. [Psychedelic harm reduction and integration: a transtheoretical model for clinical practice, Frontiers in Psychology, 2021, read 28 October 2026] Integration circles (peer groups, often online) and therapists who offer psychedelic integration can help, especially if something difficult is still with you weeks later. Tell any therapist you already see.

To see how all of this can fit together, read an example week, an illustrative composite.

Questions

Do I need a dieta before taking mushrooms?

Not for safety. The ayahuasca dieta comes from tradition and from pharmacology: ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, and harm-reduction guidance for ayahuasca advises avoiding tyramine-rich foods such as aged cheese around a session. Psilocybin contains no MAO inhibitor. A lighter week of simple food, less alcohol and caffeine, and less screen time is a choice for focus and ritual. [Deciding to take ayahuasca, ICEERS, 2018, read 28 October 2026] [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026]

Can I combine psilocybin with ayahuasca or Syrian rue?

Avoid it. Ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, Syrian rue seed extracts are potent MAO-A inhibitors, and a review of serotonin toxicity found that true serotonin toxicity typically involves an MAOI combined with a drug that raises serotonin. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] [beta-Carboline alkaloids in Peganum harmala and inhibition of human monoamine oxidase (MAO), Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2010, read 28 October 2026] [Serotonin toxicity of serotonergic psychedelics, Psychopharmacology, 2022, read 28 October 2026]

What does a sitter actually do?

A sitter stays sober, keeps the space safe and stays present without steering the experience. The Zendo Project teaches four principles of psychedelic peer support: safe space; sitting, not guiding; through, not down; and difficult is not necessarily bad. [Zendo Project guide: the four principles of psychedelic support, Zendo Project, read 28 October 2026]

How long should I wait before driving?

Do not drive on the day. NIDA warns that risks rise when psilocybin is taken without supervision, including dangerous behaviour such as driving while impaired. Leave the next day clear as well. [Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms), National Institute on Drug Abuse, read 28 October 2026]

What is integration?

Integration is the work after the experience of making sense of it and deciding what, if anything, to change. Published models describe it as an ongoing process, often supported by journaling, conversation, therapy or peer groups. [Psychedelic integration: an analysis of the concept and its practice, Frontiers in Psychology, 2022, read 28 October 2026]

When a retreat or licensed centre is the better choice

A four-week plan at home still leaves you without screening, medical staff or a facilitator trained for a crisis. Those are what a licensed centre or a well-run retreat adds.

If you take any medication on the interaction checker, have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, have a heart condition, or have nobody sober and steady to sit with you, a setting with screening and trained staff is the safer choice. In trials, participants were screened first and supported by trained monitors throughout.
