Psilocybin interaction checker

Lithium, MAOIs and ayahuasca, antidepressants, stimulants, tramadol and more: the risk level, what is known and the study behind it.

Talk to your prescriber. Never stop a medicine abruptly on your own.

This is not medical advice and not a list of safe combinations. It cannot account for your doses, your health or other medicines you take.

What do you take? Choose any that apply.

Lithium

Avoid: dangerous

For example Lithobid, Camcolit, Priadel

In an analysis of online reports, 47% of 62 reports of lithium taken with a classic psychedelic such as psilocybin or LSD involved seizures, and 39% involved medical attention. Oregon's licensed programme turns away anyone who has taken lithium in the last 30 days. [Classic psychedelic coadministration with lithium, but not lamotrigine, is associated with seizures: an analysis of online psychedelic experience reports, Pharmacopsychiatry, 2021, read 28 October 2026] [Client Information Form (Oregon Psilocybin Services), Oregon Health Authority, 2026, read 28 October 2026]

Avoid the combination. Talk to your prescriber. Never stop a prescribed medicine abruptly on your own.

Talk to your prescriber before combining anything with psilocybin, and never stop a prescribed medicine abruptly on your own: stopping some medicines suddenly is itself dangerous.

Every medicine class, at a glance

The full table, so nothing depends on the checker above. Ratings are ours, from the evidence cited in each row; “little evidence” means nobody has studied the combination, not that it is safe.

Conditions matter as much as medicines

Research screening excludes people with a personal or family history of psychosis or other severe psychiatric disorders. [Human hallucinogen research: guidelines for safety, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2008, read 28 October 2026] In a survey of 541 people with bipolar disorder who had used psilocybin, 32.2% described new or worsening symptoms afterwards, prominently manic symptoms, sleep problems and anxiety. [Risks and benefits of psilocybin use in people with bipolar disorder: an international web-based survey, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2023, read 28 October 2026] Psilocybin raises blood pressure and heart rate. [Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms), National Institute on Drug Abuse, read 28 October 2026] The safety and medications guide has every screened condition with its source.

Questions

Is it dangerous to take psilocybin with lithium?

Yes. In an analysis of online reports, 47% of 62 reports of lithium taken with a classic psychedelic involved seizures and 39% involved medical attention. Avoid the combination, and do not stop lithium without your prescriber. [Classic psychedelic coadministration with lithium, but not lamotrigine, is associated with seizures: an analysis of online psychedelic experience reports, Pharmacopsychiatry, 2021, read 28 October 2026]

Can I take mushrooms while on an SSRI?

The main documented effect is blunting: in a survey of 611 reports, the probability of weaker than expected effects was 0.47 with SSRIs, and blunting was reported for up to three months after stopping. Do not stop an SSRI on your own to avoid this; talk to your prescriber. [Attenuation of psilocybin mushroom effects during and after SSRI/SNRI antidepressant use, Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2023, read 28 October 2026]

What is psilohuasca, and is it safe?

Psilohuasca is psilocybin combined with an MAO inhibitor such as Syrian rue or ayahuasca vine. Avoid it: a review of serotonin toxicity found the main danger with serotonergic psychedelics arises when an MAOI is involved. [Serotonin toxicity of serotonergic psychedelics, Psychopharmacology, 2022, read 28 October 2026]

Should I stop my medication before a retreat?

Never on your own. Stopping some psychiatric medicines abruptly is dangerous in itself. Any change should be planned and supervised by your prescriber, well in advance. [Deciding to take ayahuasca, ICEERS, 2018, read 28 October 2026]

Is a medicine not on this list safe with psilocybin?

No. This list covers common classes with published evidence or clear warnings. A medicine missing from it may still interact. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist.

When a retreat or licensed centre is the better choice

If you take any medication on the interaction checker, have a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, have a heart condition, or have nobody sober and steady to sit with you, a setting with screening and trained staff is the safer choice. In trials, participants were screened first and supported by trained monitors throughout.
