Mushroom Retreats

Oregon, Colorado or abroad?

A licensed session in a US state against a residential retreat overseas: law, format, age and cost.

There are two quite different things called a psilocybin retreat. In Oregon and Colorado, the state licenses centres and facilitators, and you book a session: preparation, a supervised day at the centre, integration. Abroad, you book a residential programme of several nights, in a place where psilocybin is unscheduled (Jamaica), legal in truffle form (the Netherlands), or illegal but tolerated (Costa Rica, Mexico, Portugal).

Oregon and Colorado, side by side

The Oregon Health Authority licenses psilocybin service centres, facilitators and manufacturers under ORS 475A. Psilocybin may be used only at a licensed service centre with a facilitator, with no take-home or retail sale, and only by adults 21 and over. Cities and counties can vote to ban psilocybin businesses locally. Psilocybin remains a Schedule I substance under federal law.

Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act (Proposition 122, 2022), as amended by SB23-290, lets the Department of Revenue's Natural Medicine Division license healing centres, with facilitators licensed separately. The division issued its first healing centre licence on 31 March 2025. Natural medicine currently means psilocybin and psilocyn, and the statute excludes peyote by name. Psilocybin remains a Schedule I substance under federal law.

In both states psilocybin remains a Schedule I substance under federal law. In Oregon the psilocybin is taken at the centre with nothing to take home, and every client completes a state screening form first; ask a Colorado centre how its own sessions and screening work.

Abroad

A retreat abroad buys you time, a group and a place, which a single licensed session does not. It also means no state licence, no inspection, and in three of the five places, a substance that is illegal under national law. Read the law page for any place before you book:

  • Jamaica: Psilocybin mushrooms are unscheduled: not listed in the drug law, and not licensed either.
  • Netherlands: Fresh psilocybin truffles fall outside the Opium Act; mushrooms have been banned since 2008.
  • Costa Rica: Illegal under national law, yet retreats operate openly with no reported prosecution of one.
  • Mexico: Illegal under national law, yet retreats advertise openly with no reported prosecution of a psilocybin retreat.
  • Portugal: Personal possession is an administrative offence, but supplying psilocybin is trafficking; retreats operate openly.
